Sign Language and Oral Language Facilitator

When developing an appropriate educational program for an individual or student with hearing loss, it is critical that his or her language needs are carefully considered. This focus allows teams to determine the appropriate communication medium for learning information and interacting functionally with the world.
Qualities:
To facilitate language for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their preferred mode of communication. The Language Facilitator’s role is not that of an interpreter; rather, the facilitator makes the language-rich activities and interactions of the classroom accessible to the student, so natural language learning and development is supported. Qualities include collaborative team player, reliable, listener, strong communication skills, creative problem solving, teachable spirit, and HIPPA/FERPA compliant. Facilitators also exhibit:
  • Fluency in student’s language / communication mode (American Sign Language, Bi-Modal Communication, listening and spoken language), with flexibility to use language skills to support student’s needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral or signed communication and written forms, with competence in English grammar and mechanics (spelling, capitalization, and punctuation) and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with students of varying maturational, communicative, cognitive, and functional educational levels.
Contractor Duties (as directed by the teacher): other duties as assigned.
  • Clarifies aspects of the student’s surroundings: i.e., routines, rules, and concepts.
  • Assists staff and peers to develop effective communication strategies with the student.
  • Uses a variety of communication methods (i.e., sign, voice, gesture, print) to clarify and enrich communication between student and others based on student need
  • Paraphrases instruction, stories and other spoken interchanges between peers and staff in a way that targets and scaffolds language development.
  • Performs other tasks, including one-on-one tutoring, pre-teaching, and re-teaching, specific to the needs of the student.
  • Expand what student, peers and staff communicate to model more complex language.
  • Implement student’s IEP through tutoring or small group instruction as directed by Teacher of the Deaf.
  • As needed, work one-on-one with student to complete activities by modeling and assisting.
  • Assist with curriculum modification as directed by Teacher of the Deaf.
  • Performs range of essential duties in other environments (i.e., vocational and community settings and after-school activities) as directed by the IEP.
  • Works with Teacher of the Deaf to plan and scaffold student learning to develop age-appropriate independence and self-advocacy.
  • Participate in team meetings with Classroom Teacher, Teacher of the Deaf, and service providers on a regular basis when invited.
  • Assist in managing the student’s amplification and communication equipment.
  • Implement behavior management strategies as directed by IEP team and Teacher of the Deaf.
  • Assist with management of student’s personal care as needed.
  • Scaffold language at the student’s level and model complex language
  • Narrate student’s surroundings and actions
  • Act as a liaison between the Classroom Teacher and the Teacher of the Deaf
  • Act as a role model for advocacy and communication access
Must pass a background check, maintain liability insurance, and provide proof of a TB Test
Education/Experience
Minimum High School Diploma, Associates degree preferred
  • Experience working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • For ASL users, Bi-lingual in American Sign Language and written English
  • General background in Liberal Arts, Science, and Math to allow understanding of content in K-12 curriculum areas.
  • Training in child development and/or education preferred.
Certification
One or more of the following certifications:
  • ASLPI 4+ and EIPA: Written Test passed.
  • EIPA 4.0 preferred
  • Certified Deaf Interpreter
  • National Interpreter Certification
Must pass ASL Skills interview if no certification is presented.
Job Types: Full-time, Contract, Temporary
Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 35 per week
