A Brief Overview
The Lactation Consultant is the clinical expert in the management of breastfeeding and human lactation. They promote and provide lactation resources and support for patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Essential Functions
- Coordinates comprehensive lactation services in collaboration with mothers, caregivers and healthcare team members for the successful initiation and maintenance of lactation for the infant/child and provides leadership in the promotion of lactation management. • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates lactation practices using clinical practice guidelines from the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBCLE). • Meets with mothers as needed to provide accurate information on the choice to breastfeed. • Educates mothers regarding breastfeeding basics, handling of human milk, how to establish and maintain milk production in absence of effective breastfeeding and addresses any lactation difficulties or barriers to long term success. • Provides ongoing maternal support and advocacy to the lactating mother during hospitalization. • Participates in daily/weekly interdisciplinary rounding, collaborating with other team members to develop/document a lactation plan of care for appropriate infants • Collaborates with the healthcare team in communication and decision-making of the lactation plan of care, documenting the plan appropriately. • Collaborates with the caregivers to facilitate ongoing lactation plans and support at discharge.
- • Ensures that area of focus lactation care practices are consistent with current lactation research and are integrated into related clinic/unit/hospital policies & procedures. • Serves as an expert, role model, and mentor for the healthcare team in lactation care practices, recognizing opportunities to effectively utilize change theory in the promotion of lactation. • Provides lactation education opportunities and resources for healthcare team members and provides support services for lactating staff. • Collaborates with management and staff to ensure that the hospital culture supports breastfeeding and the use of human milk as a priority.

- Demonstrates flexibility in hours.
Professionally teaches/transfers knowledge and information to colleagues.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in nursing Required
Experience Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years NICU, pediatric nursing, or Mother Baby environment experience Required and
- Minimum 1 year experience as Lactation Consultant/Educator Preferred and
- International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) member Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritizing skills.
- Warm, enthusiastic, and caring personality.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication/interaction skills needed to be respected as a teacher, role model by staff, families, and other disciplines.
- Must possess excellent communication, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to conduct education and training sessions with clinical nutrition staff, medical staff, nursing and other staff within the organization.
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the state of Nebraska Required and
- Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association Required and
IBCLC - International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Required
