SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL/NURSING HEALTH ASSISTANT The job of Special Education Instructional Health Assistant was established for the purpose/s of assessing the health needs of students; following individual health plans (IHP), incorporating input for parent and/or physician, complying with the laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; providing health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff and administrators, and identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment; working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a professionally licensed teacher in the supervision and instruction of students; and providing support to teacher/s and staff. Administers medications, procedures, treatments, etc. utilizing age-specific standards. Assists in the development (in collaboration with R.N) of individual student care plans in order to address student’s health needs; provide direction to site personnel and/or implement directions provided by parents and/or physicians. Administers/coordinates mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing and/or back/scoliosis screenings, etc.) so that medical conditions can be referred and/or to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children. Participates, per licensure guidelines, in physical examinations (e.g. heat-to-toe assessments) and health care plans for symptomatic students for the purpose of providing quality care. Assesses situations involving student’s safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues. Prepares written documentation as necessary, and within the necessary guidelines to ensure IEP and compliance standards are met. Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies to promote and/or secure student health services, provide information and comply with legal requirements. Conducts age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g. health education, nutritional workshops, etc.). Conducts assessments (e.g. health issues, student health records, emergency preparedness, etc.) in order to identify issues and/or provide recommendations for improving safety and accessibility. Develops and implements individual student health care plans for students with health problems that address student’s health needs, provides direction to school personnel, and/or implements directions provided by parents and/or health care providers. Maintains contact with parents/guardians to advise them of changes in student health and/or to recommend further medical intervention. Monitors students referred for illness and/or injury and attends to their immediate health care concerns and initiates follow-up care. Monitors students with chronic illnesses. Participates, per licensure guideline, in physical examinations (e.g. head-to-toe assessments) and health care plans for symptomatic students per Nursing Procedures. Provides home visits to students and families as necessary. Implements, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans in order to present and/or reinforce learning concepts to help in reaching IEP goals and objectives. Maintains classroom equipment, work area, manual and electronic files and records to ensure availability of items; provide written reference; provide a safe learning environment; and meet mandated requirements. Participates as needed, (per appropriate techniques, as trained), in restraining students (e.g. whose behavior is disruptive or dangerous to self and others). Provides training on a variety of health related subjects (e.g. medication classes, CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, policies and procedures, substance abuse, growth and development, food allergies, STDs, hygiene, etc.). Refers students requiring additional medical attention to the appropriate health care provider. Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, etc.). Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading, etc.). Rides school bus with students in orders to monitor student conduct, maintain discipline, and ensure that compliance and safety standards are met. Transports supplies and equipment to school sites or emergency shelters. Plans school health programs under the direction of the Supervisor of Nursing. Maintains accurate, detailed documentation of students in compiling reports and records. Communicates protected health care information with school administration and staff systematically and on a “need-to-know” basis. Reports and documents significant student injuries, accidents, or illness trends to the building principal and Supervisor of Nursing. Completes the Accident Reporting Form as needed. Attends school related functions for students upon the approval from supervisor(s). Participates as a member of the 504 and/or IEP team as needed. Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases and reports as needed. Prepares and submits daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports. Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care. Maintains a high level of personal integrity and strong work ethic. Assumes the responsibility of having regular and timely attendance. Participates in a variety of meetings and trainings. Assumes responsibility for knowing and following the safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job. Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the benefit of and in the best interest of students in the academic areas, athletics, special programs, extra-curricular activities, etc. Follows all board policies, school system rules and administrative regulations. Maintains confidentiality relative to employee, student, and parent records/information and procedures according to legal and system guidelines such as the Employee Handbook or Kingsport City Schools Policy Manual. Reports immediately, as required by law, to the appropriate agency(ies) and the principal or other persons designated by the school system, incidents of actual or suspected child abuse, actual or suspected child sexual abuse.
