Urban Upbound Youth Pathways Program Career Advancement Coach Location: Long Island City About Urban Upbound Founded in 2004, the mission of Urban Upbound is to break cycles of poverty in public housing neighborhoods by providing youth and adults the tools and resources needed to achieve economic mobility and self-sufficiency. Urban Upbound seeks a workforce development professional to join our dedicated team as a Youth Pathway Career Advancement Coach. Candidates must be capable of successfully supporting Transitional Age Youth (ages 18-24) with job readiness workshops, planning and facilitating training workshops on employment-related topics including but not limited to labor market trends, resume clinics, and interview techniques. The Career Advancement Coach will be coordinating job retention and career advancement strategies for employed program participants. The Career Advancement Coach provides a range of counseling and coaching services that are tailored to the needs of individual participants, from changing participants' attitudes towards their future and goal setting, to vocational training referrals and internship placement. The ideal candidate would have individualized case management experience with clients from diverse economic, cultural and social backgrounds including low to moderate income. Additionally, the ideal candidate would have prior experience working with youth between the ages of 18-24 years old with a willingness to travel to our Far Rockaway office. Responsibilities:
Conducting 1-on-1 coaching sessions and facilitating monthly meetings with employed members that bring meaning to the first-year-on-the-job experience, addressing common barriers and challenges to staying employed and attaining career advancement;
Overseeing a caseload of participants and providing coaching and guidance for career exploration;
Facilitating job readiness, sector based and career exploration workshops;
Connecting young adults to supplemental educational services offered by employer partners and community based organizations that foster positive educational and employment gains;
Nurturing and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders including employer partners, local businesses, educational and training providers and other community-based organizations that will enhance the program;
Maintaining a strong supportive relationship with employed participants through consistent communication via phone, text, email, mail, social media, and in-person visits to participants jobs, and/or other designated meeting places;
Referring participants to educational, financial, career advancement, and social support opportunities offered by program partners;
Developing a comprehensive retention strategy to ensure employed participants promptly submit 90-day, 180-day and 1 year employment verification documents and access corresponding incentives;
Planning offsite trips, garnering support from community partners, and gathering feedback from employed participants;
Using quantitative and qualitative data to plan and execute monthly networking meetings for employed participants; tracking data and progress in Urban Upbound’s database; and
Other tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director and Urban Upbound leadership.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree- preferred
Prior experience working with youth 18-24 year old
Prior workshop and presentation experience
Prior work experience working with low income communities helpful
Spanish language proficiency preferred
Must be based in NYC Metropolitan area and able to travel between offices
Willingness to travel is a must (drive or use mass transit)
Preferred Qualities:
Prior experience working with youth population, including lower income youth
Commitment to helping social empowerment and economic development
Genuine passion about workforce development is essential, although advanced knowledge on topics may be learned on the job
Client focus and adaptability to different personality types and age groups
Independent self-starter with strong teamwork abilities, as you will be given a lot of autonomy in managing your own clientele
Flexibility in working towards the larger mission of Urban Upbound, as this may involve a lot of experimentation in approaches to working with clients and referrals to other programs
Creativity in your approaches to working with people. Ideas are welcome here, including on improving client service delivery through technology, integration and communication methods
