Bus Rider Job Description Title: Bus Rider Responsible For: Supportive Role Reports To: Operations Manager Exempt Position: No Position Summary: The classroom aide is responsible for the safety and entertainment of children while on the bus. Implements appropriate bus safety rules and positive behavior reinforcement for children riding the bus. Works collaboratively as part of the transportation team. Functions as a substitute bus driver when needed. Communicates effectively with parents/guardians. Maintains confidentiality and attends scheduled bus crew and program-wide meetings and training. Duties and Responsibilities: Essential:
Ensures all children are seated and secured with safety belts prior to moving the vehicle.
Assists children as they board and exit the bus as necessary.
Teaches and reinforces bus safety rules including danger zones, boarding/exiting procedures, and safe riding practices.
Utilizes positive behavior strategies and reinforcement methods that are consistent with classroom expectations.
Assists with emergency evacuation drills per the current procedure.
Provides developmentally appropriate entertainment for children including songs, stories and conversation.
Practices active supervision and communicates with bus driver to ensure children are accounted for at all times.
Maintains a clean bus including exterior, seats, windows and floors.
Assists with bus maintenance as needed and reports any needed repairs to Operations Manager for approval.
Assists bus driver with run sheet updates and obtaining copies of current emergency contact information.
Obtains Commercial Driver’s License within one year if not current at time of hire.
Maintains current Commercial Driver’s License.
Substitutes as bus driver when needed, adhering to the essential functions of that position.
Works cooperatively with Manager and other service area staff, as well as parents and day care providers.
Helps monitor the playground during recess.
Helps bring in and out the empower packs.
Completes other duties as assigned.

May be required to substitute on the bus in the event of staff absences.
Ability to kneel, stoop, bend, twist, push, pull, crawl, sit, and go up and down stairs daily.
Ability to operate office equipment as applicable.
Work longer or irregular hours.
Work around machines and moving objects.
Ability to work on ladders/scaffolds.
Ensures the Head Start Performance Standards and state childcare licensing requirements are followed.
Abides by Child Start Inc. Standards of Conduct and Policies and Procedures to accomplish agency goals.

Commercial Driver’s License
Experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job duties.
Required:
Must be 18 years or older.
Must be in possession of a valid Montana Driver’s License.
Must complete required health screenings, immunizations, and physical.
Must pass a comprehensive State and FBI fingerprint background check.
Working Conditions: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues and prolonged exposure to cold/hot temperatures during recess duty. Risk involved with travel on national flights, main highways, side streets, and rural roads during business travel, including travel to meetings and training events. Tasks may involve handling implements or utensils, use of public or shared bathroom facilities or telephones and personal contacts. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. This job may require you to lift items up to 50 lbs. in weight. The ability to successfully perform the job in this manner is required.
