Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the role

“The team’s primary focus is the safe, compliant and efficient delivery of waste management operations. We would like to welcome an individual that can bring radiological and environmental knowledge to our team and support with the optimisation of waste management solutions for the business. Please note this role is part time - 24 hours per week. Salary and benefits will be pro-rated
Key Deliverables:
  • Provide waste management advice to projects and infrastructure teams.
  • To coordinate waste management field operations to approved waste management procedures and standards.
  • Assess and monitor site waste generation against agreed project schedules within the Lifetime Plan.
  • Support the off-site disposal of waste consignments (radioactive and non-radadioactive) and ensure site waste operation activities are executed safely and compliantly.
  • Maintain Waste production/disposal records and data bases to facilitate internal and external reporting.
  • Manage departmental near and medium-term planning activities and represent the Department at all key site interface/delivery meetings.
  • Contribute to the effective development and delivery of training within own area of specialism.
  • Support the effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures ensuring that the business remains compliant at all times.
  • Assist with Dangerous Goods Transport duties within Waste Operations.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • ESSENTIAL – Appropriate technical qualifications e.g. City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ level 3 (NQF Level 3) or equivalent operational experience.
  • ESSENTIAL – Experience in a Health Physics/Waste/Environment.
  • ESSENTIAL – Working knowledge of relevant industrial, Waste, radiological and safety standards and procedures.
  • ESSENTIAL - Understanding of waste management processes and relevant environmental legislation.
  • DESIRABLE- working knowledge or ability to attain working knowledge to support compliance Dangerous Goods consignment. #INDOR

  • Flexible working – where possible.
  • The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.
There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
