About the role

Are you an experienced administrator looking for a new challenge? Would you relish supporting and communicating excellent research that contributes to a better world?

We are delighted to be recruiting to a new and exciting role providing administrative, communication and events support to world leading research in vision end evolution research, as part of the Baden lab at the Department of Neuroscience.
In the role of Research Project Officer, you will be based in the School of Life Sciences, Department of Neuroscience and work within a small friendly team of academic and professional services colleagues to:
  • Oversee aspects of the day to day running of the lab, as well as contributing to the development of longer-term plans and strategies.
  • Develop plans for and organise a range of events.
This part time role is both varied and focused, supporting a small team of researchers with defined goals and tasks that adjust over the course of the year, allowing you to focus on specific targets as they arise and maintain a good work life balance.

About you

Success in this role will require an excellent organisational capability, strong communication skills and the ability to identify and creatively achieve goals. You will have an interest in the possibilities of scientific research both in terms of academic research and impact on society and the world. In return you will enjoy a dynamic environment working with academic and professional services colleagues, to achieve shared goals.
A scientific qualification or background is not a requirement for this post, but it will be an asset; nevertheless, we are a team with varied backgrounds, interests, education, and experiences.

About our School

In the School of Life Sciences we strive to understand the mechanisms that drive biological and chemical processes and to develop innovative and diverse approaches to enhance human health, technology and the environment. We undertake multidisciplinary research, teaching and engagement across a wide range of subjects, from Chemistry through Cellular and Molecular Biosciences to Conservation Biology.
The School comprises five Departments: Biochemistry & Biomedicine, Genome Damage and Stability Centre, Neuroscience, Ecology & Evolution and Chemistry. We also house the Sussex Drug Discovery Centre which works to deliver the bench-to-bedside translation of our discoveries. The breadth and depth of our cutting-edge research and innovative teaching practice is delivered by a diverse community who work across boundaries to deliver excellence, engage with real world problems and produce impact.
We pride ourselves on our world-leading research and have a strong research economy, with approximately 50% of our income stemming from research and an active grant portfolio of over £50 million. We host or form part of three University Centres of Excellence: the Genome Damage and Stability Centre, Sussex Neuroscience and Sussex Sustainability Research Programme. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 90.6 % of our Biological Sciences outputs and 84.8% of our Chemistry outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We are proud that in both areas, 100% of our Impact cases were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
