About us

The Department of Anthropology at UCL is a research-led department with an international reputation, offering innovative teaching programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both Bloomsbury and at UCL East.
The department is one of only a few broad-based anthropology departments in the UK comprising five sub-sections: Evolutionary and Environmental Anthropology, Social Anthropology, Material Culture, Medical Anthropology, and Public Anthropology.

About the role

We have an exciting part-time (0.8 FTE) Research Fellow position for a project titled “Cooperative Childrearing in Middle Childhood and Adolescent Wellbeing: A Mixed-Method Investigation using ALSPAC.” This project is part of the Evolution, Culture, and Health research cluster within the Evolutionary and Environmental Anthropology group.
As a Research Fellow, you will be responsible for data analysis and writing up the findings, working under the supervision of Dr Emily H. Emmott.
For informal inquiries, please contact Dr Emily H. Emmott, Associate Professor in Biological Anthropology, at emily.emmott@ucl.ac.uk.
If you require reasonable adjustments or need the application in a more accessible format, or if you have any questions about the application process, please contact anthro.hr@ucl.ac.uk.
The position will be available starting in February 2025 and is funded by the ESRC Secondary Data Analysis Initiative for twenty-four months.
We expect to hold interviews for this position in early January.

About you

At appointment, you must hold a Ph D in biological/evolutionary anthropology, social epidemiology, public health, sociology, social science, or any other related discipline.
You should have advanced skills in statistical analysis using complex and large datasets and experience with statistical programming software such as R or Python.
Additionally, you must demonstrate experience in open science research practices, such as pre-registering analyses and publishing analysis codes. A good understanding of biomarkers of stress and inflammation—such as salivary cortisol, IL-6, and CRP—and their associations with development or health-related outcomes is also required.
Please ensure that you submit a supporting statement as part of your application in addition to a CV and that you address each of the essential criteria in your application. When we shortlist, applications are scored according to how they meet each of the essential criteria.
Please note that for this position, we cannot offer skilled worker visa sponsorship to new entrant candidates in the UK job market.
