Director EH&S - AUTO EMEA


The Director of Environment/Health/Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) for Automotive EMEA provides global leadership, strategic direction, policy guidance, support and advice in the areas of safety, health, environment and sustainability. This leadership role has primary responsibility to continuously improve employee safety performance to world-class standards; ensure compliance and a positive safety culture; develop and implement EHS policies, programs, procedures, standards, training, and processes; and drive sustainability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic direction for EHS&S in coordination with the Automotive BU, to ensure effective utilization of resources within the geographical regions, while providing support to all sites.
  • Partner with Segment and Business Unit staff and Operations teams, to ensure EHS&S is integrated into day-to-day business processes.
  • Facilitate communication within the BU, to share problems, best practices and lessons learned.
  • Guide and promote safety performance by developing safety systems, policies, procedures and programs to eliminate, prevent and control workplace injuries.
  • Create a world-class safety culture through effective leadership training and by using behavioral safety methods to motivate and influence the workforce.
  • Lead the Region in implementing cost-effective energy reduction initiatives, overall environmental footprint
  • reduction and achieving company sustainability objectives.
  • Be the key advisor to the Region for compliance with regulatory and company EHS requirements, by providing global support for regulatory/agency interactions, enforcement actions, and reports.
  • Ensure that incidents, near-hits and compliance deviations are fully investigated with Operations to ensure that corrective and/or preventive measures are taken based on root cause analysis.
  • Collect, analyze and trend EHS&S metrics, communicate results, and develop strategies and specific actions to drive safety and environmental improvement.
  • Develop strategies and oversee initiatives for key risk reduction programs, such as machine guarding / ergonomics / LOTO etc.
  • Oversee the Budget regarding EHS&S topics for all EMEA sites (production and non-production).
  • Ensure the Plants have effective Business Continuity Plans, and liaison with TE Enterprise Risk Management to drive ongoing improvement in FM Global property risk management.
  • Work with the Business Unit teams to develop and implement action plans, projects, initiatives, goals and objectives that maintain balance between corporate objectives, business needs, and operations.
  • Lead EHS&S talent management within the Region, supporting hiring, developing and retaining regional EHS&S staff. Provide coaching and mentoring of EHS&S professionals, to support succession planning.
  • Periodically visit sites for review of site conditions and management review of EHS&S issues.
Required Experience
  • Proven experience in manufacturing or industrial operations, 10 years minimum, exposure to EHS&S topics.
  • Must have strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively work with all levels of Management and Corporate departments such as EHS&S / Law / Human Resources / Risk Management etc.
  • Must have excellent organizational and collaboration skills, as well as oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, and able to make independent, informed and prioritized decisions.
  • Must be able to work in both individual and teamwork settings with minimal supervision.
  • Must be effective in Change Management – communicate changes effectively, prepare and support those affected by change.
  • Must know how to successfully coach and develop others.
  • Overall strong Operations / EHS&S competency; solid technical understanding and experience in industrial processes, ergonomics, machine guarding, control of hazardous energy, waste water, waste management and chemical management.
  • Strong commitment to improving safety performance, EHS&S compliance, environmental improvements, and EHS&S efficiency.
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize needs, communicate to plant EHS, plant managers, and senior management and ensure implementation of needed actions.
  • Ability to drive improvement throughout the segment.
