At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. That's our story. Make it your story.
This position reports to
R&D Team Lead
Your role and responsibilities
Recently there has been several humanoid robots presented by universities and companies mainly in Asia and US. There are several different kinematics solutions to achieve “human-like” dual arm robot system. These differences lead to different characteristics of the motion capability. Furthermore, the target to reach “human-like” form factor drives development to slim and compact mechatronics designs, including structural members as well as drive trains. The present project targets review today’s humanoid robots upper body designs and identify key similarities and differences and their impact on robot capabilities. Research topics: Kinematics configuration and drive-train concept for dual arm robot systems – state-of-art map and analysis. Goal(s): 1. State-of-art review of upper body designs among today’s humanoid robots, including “hands”. Develop KPI’s/categories to evaluate and compare different designs. 2. Propose (conceptual) kinematics configuration and drive-train concept for dual-arm robot with specific requirement specification. Details: • 6 month (October, 2024 till March, 2025) • 30 credits • One student • Since lab work involved, the MS student need to come ABB office in Västerås • Contacts for details: Jonas.larsson@se.abb.com Your responsibilities: • Review literature and IP on the topic • Identify KPI’s to be evaluated for the purpose to compare different mechatronics designs. • Based on specific requirements, propose a conceptual design
Qualifications for the role
Suitable for student with interest in robotics in general and mechatronics systems simulation in particular
Merit with prior knowledge in kinematics and dynamics analysis is merit and/ or Machine elements related to drive train
