Position Purpose To provide advice and coordination for our approach to Tikanga Māori

within Student Wellbeing which aligns to the overall aspirations for the
Office of Students and Global Engagement (Sa GE). In line with the
University’s Te Tiriti-led commitment, this is a key strategic objective, but
one in which we will strive for across the portfolio. This role includes
working alongside the Kaiarataki Matua Senior Advisor Māori (Sa GE) to
provide oversight and application of professional development in Te Reo
me ōna Tikanga through thoughtful and intentional Māori-led pedagogy,
and further enhancing the contribution of the portfolio to our Te Tiriti o
Waitangi strategies.

About this department Student Wellbeing provides wellbeing support for students. The Office of

Student Experience (OSE) guides and supports our tauira through their
Massey Experience. This is achieved by ensuring: students
are enabled to achieve; students are engaged with the University and
students are empowered to participate in their community and to grow
their whole self. As a team we take a strengths-based approach to our
work and are committed to a culture of continuous improvement.

Student Wellbeing and Safety forms an integral part of the OSE, Student
Wellbeing Services offer a range of services, programmes, health
promotions and engagement opportunities to support wellbeing during
student’s time at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University. We
understand the challenges tertiary study can bring and the importance of
a holistic approach to keeping well, providing a multi-pronged approach to
support academic success and the development of life skills.

Accountabilities


Advisory Services Provide guidance and advice across the Student Wellbeing teams as it

relates to Te Reo me ōna Tikanga Māori.

To provide guidance and advice on Tikanga Māori, with a focus on
understanding its purpose, benefits, and place within the working
environment.

To work with the Kaiarataki Matua Senior Advisor Māori to assist in
developing a culture within Sa GE that gives meaningful and authentic
expression to the University’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi strategic initiatives.



Team goals and With our team goals focussing on supporting our students your actions
culture will reflect this by being pro-active, knowledgeable, agile and

flexible. Aiming to be an expert in your area whilst having an
overarching understanding across Student Wellbeing and a willingness
to assist in any, and all areas (Sa GE), as required.

In this role, you will play an integral part in upholding our team culture.
You will ensure that your actions consistently reflect our core values and
take pride in personally owning these goals, values, and behaviours.
Additionally, you will be responsible for maintaining confidentiality and
working collaboratively across various Disciplines to create a safe
environment where staff feel comfortable seeking information, support in
decision-making, and able to seek guidance . Your commitment to these
principles will be vital in fostering a supportive and cohesive team
atmosphere.



Ongoing improvement To work with Student Wellbeing to ensure they have appropriate

operating systems and processes in place that recognise the benefits of
being Te Tiriti-led.

Model behaviours that support the universities Te Tiriti-led commitments.

To work with the Kaiarataki Matua Senior Advisor Māori on staff
development opportunities that will enhance the teams approach to Te
Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga.

Contribute and support on-going reviews and implementation of Student
Wellbeing processes, to maximise efficiency and effectiveness.

Ensure you are proactive in building and remaining current in your
knowledge (regulations, policies, procedures, system opportunities etc)
and seek ways to improve our support of students.

A key aspect of this role involves staying informed about current
developments in the health sector and Māori models of health and
wellbeing. You will also keep up to date with emerging trends and
current issues affecting education locally and globally, particularly
those impacting Massey University. Your commitment to these
principles will be essential in fostering a supportive and cohesive team
atmosphere.

Functional Tikanga Māori
Accountabilities

Present and facilitate cultural capability training with staff to enhance the
knowledge of Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori, Te Reo Māori me ōna
Tikanga.

Advise, coordinate and administer the delivery of this training as directed
by the Kaiarataki Matua Senior Advisor Māori;
  • Advise the team on specialist requirements, as appropriate;
  • Undertake continuing personal professional development.

Collaborative Relationships

  • To actively support the Associate Director of Student Wellbeing in
the development of key initiatives and projects. That support the
development of Te Ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori, Te Reo Māori
me ōna Tikanga across the Student Wellbeing team;
  • To work closely with the Kaiarataki Matua Senior Advisor Māori
to align efforts and enhance cultural capability across the team;
  • To actively work in partnership with students (prospective, current
and past students), taking on their views and using this to help
inform future decisions;
  • Ability to work effectively across various services, recognising
and navigating the complexities and interdependencies within the
student wellbeing, health services and the wider university;
  • To be an advocate of the Portfolio in all forums;
  • Enhance and leverage future opportunities as they arise.

Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: A relevant tertiary qualification at bachelor’s degree level or above is
preferred but not essential

Conversational Te Reo Māori and demonstrable experience in Tikanga
Māori.


Experience: • Prior experience in advice and/or leading Tikanga Māori delivery

within a tertiary setting or other educational settings;
  • Proven ability to uphold the integrity of Tikanga Māori across a range
of situations and settings;
  • Ability to organise and lead Tikanga Māori arrangements across a
range of settings including hui, campus events and ceremonies;
  • Prior experience in advising and/or leading Tikanga Māori delivery
within a tertiary setting or health settings, with a focus on increasing
knowledge and understanding;
  • Demonstrates a capacity for providing advice, and a proven record of
accomplishment of developing strong and effective relationships in
the achievement of strategic outcomes;
  • Experience of working in a customer-focused role, often working
under pressure and to tight deadlines;
  • The ability to present to, and to communicate with a range of
audiences;
  • Proven experience working as part of a highly motivated team and
gaining the respect of peers and stakeholders;
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation, operational
execution and reporting;
  • Proven ability to establish and develop effective relationships with
external groups and internal stakeholders would be an advantage;
