Job Description: We are launching a transformative project to develop a cochineal insect pilot farm and a full-scale commercial facility in Mexico. Our goal is to integrate advanced technology with sustainable practices to redefine the cochineal industry. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer or Industrial Designer to help set up and operate a pilot facility dedicated to the production of cochineal insects (Dactylopius coccus). This position represents a crucial step towards building a commercial indoor production facility aimed at promoting sustainable practices in the production of natural dyes and contributing to the local economy. This role involves designing and optimizing mechanical systems and equipment, supporting daily operations, and collaborating with our lead entomologist on research trials. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with a passion for agricultural innovation. Key Responsibilities: · Design and Development: Create and refine mechanical and industrial designs for the facility, including breeding chambers, feeding systems, climate control systems, and harvesting equipment. · Pilot Facility Operations: Support the daily operations of the pilot facility, ensuring that all mechanical systems and equipment function efficiently and effectively. Troubleshoot and resolve any operational issues. · Research Collaboration: Work closely with the lead entomologist to design and implement research trials related to cochineal insect farming. Assist in setting up experimental equipment and monitoring trial results. · Optimization: Analyze and enhance the performance of mechanical systems to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and meet research objectives. · Prototyping and Testing: Develop prototypes for new equipment or modifications, and conduct testing to validate performance and safety. · Compliance and Documentation: Ensure designs and operations comply with local regulations and industry standards. Maintain thorough documentation of design processes, modifications, and research trial results. · Supplier and Vendor Management: Coordinate with suppliers and vendors to source materials and components. Oversee the installation and maintenance of equipment. · Technical Support: Provide ongoing technical support for equipment and systems, including during installation, commissioning, and operational phases. Qualifications: · Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field. Master’s degree or professional certification is a plus. · Minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience in mechanical design or industrial design, preferably with experience in agricultural or industrial applications. · Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Auto CAD, Solid Works), strong problem-solving abilities, and experience with complex mechanical systems. · Familiarity with agricultural processes and equipment is advantageous. Understanding of cochineal insect biology and farming practices is a plus. · Experience working in technology commercialization or technology transfer/licensing, is desirable. · Innovative thinking, detail-oriented, team player, and proactive problem-solving skills. · Project management experience, ideally leading teams on commercial research and development activities. · Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to conduct independent research. · Fluent in English and Spanish, with strong communication skills in both languages. · Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working collaboratively with a diverse team.
