The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most competitive university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 48 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with around 11.000 employees.
The Institute for Neuroradiology at LMU Klinikum, invites applications for a Student for Assistance in Research in AI-Driven Dementia Diagnosis position in the Multimodal Imaging Lab led by Dr. Boris-Stephan Rauchmann.
Scope of duties
About the Project: Dementia affects over 55 million people globally, with cases expected to nearly double by 2050. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in managing dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease.
Our research, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), focuses on developing and deploying a cloud-based, AI-driven algorithm for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis. This project aims to create cutting-edge tools that facilitate the accurate diagnosis of dementia using multimodal data such as MRI and PET imaging.
The ultimate goal is to transition this research into a market-ready solution for clinical use.
Role Overview: As a Student Assistant, you will work closely with a Post Doc leading this research to provide valuable support across various stages of the project. Your tasks will include:
Data Management and Preprocessing: You assist with organizing and preprocessing imaging (MRI, PET) and tabular data for model training. In addition to that, you support data annotation, cleaning, and quality control efforts.
AI/ML Model Development: You contribute to the development and fine-tuning of machine learning models, including neural networks (e.g., 3D-CNNs) and transformers, under the supervision of a Post Doc. Furthermore you assist in the implementation of statistical and machine learning methods for dementia prediction.
Technical Documentation and Literature Review: You help in maintaining clear and thorough documentation of all code, data processing steps, and experimental results. Besides you conduct literature reviews to support the scientific basis of the research and suggest potential improvements.
Cloud-Based Platform Support: You assist in the integration and testing of the AI model on the AWS cloud platform as well as help troubleshoot cloud-based deployment issues under the guidance of senior researchers.
Pilot Study Support: You provide aid in preparing and coordinating datasets and technical tools required for a clinical pilot study involving dementia patients and healthy controls.

Knowledge of MRI/PET imaging and cloud computing (e.g., AWS) is a plus but not mandatory
Strong interest in neurodegenerative diseases and AI applications in healthcare
Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with the Post Doc and the broader research team
Our offer
We offer an hourly payment rate of €13.25 for a maximum of 12 hours per week.
You get the opportunity to work in a cutting-edge research environment at one of Europe’s top medical research institutes.
You get a hands-on experience in machine learning, AI, and cloud computing with access to high-performance computing resources.
We offer the potential to contribute to impactful research with real-world applications in dementia diagnosis.
We provide flexible working hours to accommodate your academic schedule.
