Site Superintendent

RMS Builders Inc. is a 100% Canadian owned Edmonton based Construction Company in business for over 20 years. We are accepting applications for a Full-Time Site Superintendent.
Provide overall on-site management, administrative and technical direction on construction project sites. Enforce company policies and procedures and ensure the project is constructed in accordance with the design, the budget and the schedule.
Handle personnel functions such as writing justifications for dismissing workers, keeping/approving time cards for crew, and submitting HR documents. Be the preliminary contact for work-related issues that employees may have, such as vacation requests or questions about promotions, etc.
Communicate with the design professionals, consultants and client while successfully leading the Sub-Contractors and other construction related personnel in planning, coordinating and safely executing the work in accordance with the contract documents, schedule and budget.
Be responsible for overseeing all trades and effectively managing daily on site activities.
To perform all responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the company’s values and beliefs.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:
  • As a member of the Project Team, duties include being in charge of all on-site construction activities on a daily basis, enforcing company standards and procedures.
  • Advise Senior Management of potential problems, work interferences or schedule difficulties while assisting in circumventing/resolving such conflicts. The Site Superintendent has the authority to discipline Field Staff as required.
  • Review the project plans (Consultant's design drawings) and specifications; provide prompt feedback to the Project Manager on building design conflicts, scheduling, possible cost savings measures, potential errors, discrepancies and construction problems which could arise.
  • Monitor, contribute and assure compliance with project construction plans, schedules, budgets, man hours, design requirements and assume responsibility for the commissioning of project systems. Approval from the Project Manager or GM is required for items that affect budget and schedule of project.
  • Take the lead on productivity issues and monitor work performance and efficiency of employees and subcontractors to ensure project plans and schedule are followed and project is executed effectively and within budget.
  • Ensure project materials and workmanship meet the project Quality Standards.
  • Complete and review all documented deficiency list items.
  • Manage, contact, schedule and coordinate all sub-contractors, engineers, suppliers, utilities, municipal inspections and all other construction activities. Coordinate and direct independent testing and inspections as required.
  • Prepare and approve purchase orders up to a maximum of $5,000. All purchase orders in excess of $5,000 are to be issued by the Project Manager.
  • Force Account sign off only if authorized by Project Manager.
  • Ensure that “as built” information is recorded on an ongoing basis for all work by all trades during the construction period.
  • Hiring of Field Staff requires the prior approval of the Operations Manager or Project Manager.
  • Practice sound selection and hiring procedures.
  • Coordinate construction site security and monitoring as required, ensure the site is clean and free of debris, maintain a neat and tidy site office, and tool cribs.
  • Ensure a responsible RMS employee is on site at all times while sub-trades are active on the job site, including after hours and weekends.
  • Construct and maintain at all times a secured site fence as required by insurance.
  • Ensure that all site activities including work by sub-trades and suppliers meet the insurance requirements for the project you are responsible for ie; Hotworks.
  • Maintain control and responsibility for the security and operation of RMS Builders Inc. directly owned equipment on the job site. Ensure site equipment is properly functioning, all fluids are at ideal levels, equipment damage and repairs are recorded and reported and Daily Equipment Circle Checks are filled out and submitted weekly.
  • Ensure the implementation of the RMS Builders Health & Safety Program, and create a safe work environment throughout the jobsite, adhere to the safety and record keeping requirements and ensure that the Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements are enforced.
  • Conduct subtrade and new employee site orientations.
  • Submit/document all reports of record such as; Daily/Weekly Work Reports, Accident/Injury Reports, job site progress photos, WCB reports, FLHA's, Sign In/Out Logs, etc.
  • Ensure head office is notified of ALL incidents and near miss events immediately. Ensure all insurance company requirements are met. File all appropriate paper work and documentation required.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by Management or as required for successful project completion.
  • Receive shipments of goods, verify quantities and sign off. Note short shipments, defects and damages and immediately advise Project Manager or Operations Manager of delivery issues. Note damage or defects on waybill delivery slip prior to returning delivery slip to driver.
  • Adhere to and enforce the company policy with respect to the maintenance and rental of tools, and equipment. Immediately inform Equipment Manager of damaged or inoperable tools and equipment.
Required Experience:
  • 10 years of construction and supervision experience
  • Trade background with a demonstrated, progressive experience in General Contracting
  • Demonstrated competence in the areas of safety, people management, project execution, cost control, quality and administration
  • Sound knowledge of construction and building techniques and ability to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications
  • Provide direction to and resolve problems amongst 30+ subcontractors and vendors.
  • Ability to identify deficient work and provide resolution.
  • Blueprint Reading (level 3 or equivalent).
  • Proactive problem-solver that can manage difficult situations with positive results
  • Computer skills - MS Office
  • Able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives; supports everyone's efforts to succeed.
  • Forklift/telehandler and bobcat/skidsteer current operator tickets
Working Conditions:
This position involves work at a construction site where duties will be performed both indoors and outdoors. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and risk of vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Being physically fit and capable of carrying out physically demanding tasks, such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling heavy objects, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling in awkward positions. Manual dexterity, hand – eye coordination and a good sense of balance.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Use hands and fingers to handle or feel; Reach with hands and arms; Climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift 50 pounds and move up to 100 pounds.
