Summary of the Position:
The Program Manager – Adaptation Initiatives reports into the Sr. Manager of Programs. This position leads Clean's portfolio of nature-based solutions and coastal protection programs, focusing on implementing innovative ecological approaches to climate adaptation. This position oversees projects that integrate natural systems with built infrastructure to enhance community resilience, restore ecosystems, and advance sustainable coastal management practices. The role is responsible for managing a team of specialists working on initiatives such as living shorelines, wetland restoration, green infrastructure, and other nature-based adaptation strategies.
This position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of their assigned team, ensuring that projects and tasks are completed on time and within budget. This role involves developing team members, managing performance, developing and managing project budgets, completing timely and accurate internal and external financial reporting, engaging with project partners, funders and stakeholders, and maintaining effective communication both within the team and with external stakeholders. Managers at Clean are expected to contribute to the strategic growth and development of their team members and projects in alignment with overall organizational goals and priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Leading and supporting a team of adaptation specialists to implement nature-based solutions and coastal protection projects, while fostering a cohesive and collaborative team environment.
· Overseeing the design, implementation, and monitoring of nature-based adaptation projects, ensuring alignment with best practices in ecological restoration and climate resilience.
· Developing and managing project budgets for complex ecological initiatives, monitoring financial performance, and ensuring compliance with financial processes.
· Creating and implementing monitoring frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of nature-based solutions and adaptation measures.
· Coordinating with environmental scientists, engineers, and community stakeholders to develop innovative approaches to coastal protection using natural systems.
· Managing relationships with government funding bodies, including preparing funding applications, ensuring compliance with government reporting requirements, and maintaining productive partnerships with key government stakeholders.
· Building and maintaining respectful, meaningful partnerships with Mi'kmaq communities, ensuring their perspectives and traditional knowledge are appropriately incorporated into coastal adaptation initiatives.
· Developing tools and processes to efficiently manage project schedules, staffing, internal and external communications, quality, and risks within the context of ecological restoration projects.
· Setting and reviewing team and individual performance goals, conducting performance reviews, and supporting professional development for team members in nature-based solutions and coastal adaptation.
· Addressing project performance and financial issues promptly, implementing improvement plans and resolving variances while maintaining ecological integrity.
· Ensuring effective communication within the team and with external partners about complex environmental initiatives, maintaining organizational standards.
· Providing timely reporting and information about adaptation projects and teams to their Senior Manager.
· Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the environmental sector, including regulatory agencies, conservation organizations, and community groups.
· Contributing to the development and implementation of strategic plans for expanding nature-based solution programs and identifying opportunities for scaling successful initiatives.
· Overseeing the preparation of technical reports documenting ecological outcomes and project impacts.
· Identifying and pursuing opportunities for program expansion, including grant writing and proposal development for nature-based adaptation projects.
· Staying current with emerging trends and best practices in nature-based solutions and climate adaptation strategies.
Required Qualifications:
· Demonstrated experience managing government-funded projects, including knowledge of federal and provincial funding mechanisms for coastal and environmental initiatives.
· Track record of successful government grant writing and reporting.
· Understanding of Indigenous perspectives on environmental stewardship and the importance of incorporating traditional ecological knowledge into project planning.
· Proven ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships, particularly in the public sector.
· Experience managing coastal adaptation or nature-based solutions projects.
· Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Team management experience.
· Bachelor's degree in relevant field (Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Planning, or related field).
· Strong organizational, teamwork, project management, analytical, strategic thinking, problem-solving and financial skills.
· Strong written and oral communication skills.
· Readily adapts to new ideas and initiatives, changes in processes, procedures, methods, etc.
· Commitment to uphold and advocate for Clean’s values and standards.
· Proficient with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite of programs, including Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook.
Additional Assets:
· Valid PMP certification or proof of other project management training.
· Experience managing projects in non-profit environment.
· Experience working with Indigenous communities, particularly Mi'kmaq communities, in a respectful and collaborative manner.
· Experience working in the environmental sector.
· Other skills, attributes and certifications specific to a particular project may also be considered assets.
Working Conditions:
· Combination of remote and in-office hours.
· 35-hour work week.
· Travel may be required.
· Some overtime may be required based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements:
· Work on a computer for long periods of time.
· There may be other physical requirements that are specific to a particular project.
