Legal Assistant

Parlee Mc Laws LLP is a regional law firm with Alberta roots extending back more than 135 years. We are looking for an experienced Litigation Legal Assistant to join our team. This role is located at our downtown Edmonton office.
The successful candidate is a self-starter with high attention to detail, a sense of urgency, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to learn quickly while supporting busy practice(s). Experience with litigation is essential.
The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:00AM – 4:30PM (37.5 hours/week) and requires daily in-office presence.

You will deliver on:
  • Conducting court searches
  • Drafting correspondence, court, and financing legal documents
  • Accurate transcription of dictation
  • Preparing a variety of legal documents including briefs and factums
  • Pro-active management of files and task timelines to ensure required statutes of limitations and deadlines are met
  • Scheduling various applications and questionings
  • Managing incoming workflow from a team of lawyers
  • Calendar management, including coordinating and scheduling meetings
  • Preparation of accounts and time entry
  • Generating reporting as required
  • General administrative tasks including office and file management
  • Other tasks as required
You possess:
  • A minimum of 3 years of previous experience as a legal assistant in a litigation practice (administrative assistant experience is an asset)
  • Post-secondary education from a recognized Legal Assistant/Paralegal program (equivalent experience may be considered)
  • Substantial reliability and adaptability accompanied by a professional demeanor and conduct
  • Keen attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing English with solid spelling and grammar skills (additional language skills are an asset)
  • A curious mind with the ability to learn quickly, retain knowledge, and effectively apply the learning
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs as well as other software such as Worldox, Elite 3E, Remindex, Speech Exec or similar programs
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines with a high degree of personal initiative
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles
  • Handling of confidential information in an ethical and professional manner
  • Effective collaboration and efficiency as a part of a team as well as working independently
  • Strong client service and relationship building skills
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and effectiveness in a high-volume work environment
  • Problem-solving skills with a pro-active mindset
  • Experience with all levels of court is an asset
