Pay Level
BCGEU: $71,846 - $115,129 per annum (prorated if part-time).
Starting Salary
Faculty are placed on the BCGEU salary scale based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement, to an initial maximum of $89,412 per annum

Duties:
  • Instruct course(s) listed below;
  • prepare course materials and ensure materials are available for students on VIU's D2L system;
  • provide individual and group instruction using a holistic, collaborative, flexible, and student-centred approach;
  • offer student support;
  • facilitate student evaluation, perform grading and record keeping;
  • liaise with AUBP Coordinator and Aboriginal Student Transition Advisor and VIU Elders in Residence as and when appropriate;
  • participate as an active member of the instructional faculty.
Instructor(s) will work closely and as part of a team with the Nation's Education Coordinator, Learning Coach, and Program Coordinator to ensure program integrity. Course delivery may be face-to-face, remote, or blended, so having materials available in D2L shell is critical. Instructor(s) need to be prepared to teach in any or all of these environments.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and relevant teaching experience. In exceptional circumstances, where an individual holds a Bachelor's degree with 24 credits in a relevant discipline and can demonstrate excellence in teaching through related experience at VIU, the requirement for a Master's may be deferred.

Recent experience teaching stated subjects and levels. Experience teaching a variety of student success skills to adult learners, including active listening, critical thinking, personal management skills, study skills, test-taking skills, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver courses/lessons that incorporate a wide range of teaching strategies and address the needs of adult learners with various learning styles, abilities, and disabilities. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Familiarity with, and ability to, access institutional and community resources. Familiarity with VIU's courses and programs. Successful candidate will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds of ACP student populations.

Teaching Expertise: Applicants should be prepared to provide a short sample lesson or teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided before the interview. During the presentation, the applicant should expect to be questioned by the members of the interview panel.

The interview will contain at least one content question that the applicant has not been able to prepare for ahead of time. The responses will be used by the interview panel to gauge the applicant's subject knowledge, classroom management and teaching expertise.

Deep understanding of Indigenous history and issues, particularly as they relate to post-secondary education and an appreciation of the complexity and range of Indigenous peoples and communities. Demonstrated understanding and experience in working with Indigenous communities and ability to integrate Indigenous perspectives.

Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience in a post-secondary setting and an understanding and awareness of Indigenous people on Vancouver Island and local protocols. Previous experience delivering instruction in-community.
