Position Summary:
The Crop Specialist assists the Procurement division in the management of complete field-to-customer business of assigned conventional and organic grain(s). The Crop Specialist will be active in Grain Millers general procurement business but will especially focus on specialty production programs such as organics, sustainable growth program producers. The position is responsible for establishing and shepherding contracts related to specialty programing with grain producers, as well as monitoring production and program compliance. This position demands a person to be extremely conversant in agronomic characteristics and crop science, with the ability to provide agronomic advice and solutions to suppliers, while understanding grain functionality and processing/milling. The Crop Specialist brings the voice of the suppliers to the Procurement division and makes a positive impact on the business. This position represents the Company professionally at trade shows, meetings, and events, helping to coordinate these efforts as required. This includes engaging in public speaking, giving presentations and traveling to events as needed
Core Responsibilities:
Maintains a high level of technical and product knowledge.
Keeps up to date with current and new agronomic and crop production practices.
Act as a resource to suppliers and the Grain Millers team regarding best crop production practices for various grains.
Scout fields for producers providing advice as pertinent and projecting individual and/or aggregated supply forecasts and feedback for procurement team.
Identify, maintain, and grow supplier base.
Understand sustainable agriculture production practices and educate growers on implementation.
Represent the Company professionally at trade shows, meetings, and events, helping to coordinate these efforts as required. This includes engaging in public speaking, giving presentations and traveling to events as needed.
Travels up to 50% of the month, including overnight travel to multiple farmers and suppliers
Other Miscellaneous duties as and when needed as per the needs of the department.
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in agriculture, or combination of education and related experience is required.
Previous experience/ internships or related field experience will be considered an asset.
Knowledgeable in Agronomy and / or Crop Sciences.
Must possess a professional presence and outstanding presentation skills.
Adept at multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that allow effective working relationships with a diverse customer, colleague, and vendor population.
Demonstrated skill in organization, planning, and problem solving
Strong PC skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Power Point) is required.
Must have the ability and be comfortable working in an outside environment with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions
Must be able to work in a grain processing environment which exposes staff to allergens such as, but not limited to: grain, dust, and chemicals.
Must have the ability and the flexibility to travel inside and outside Canada.
