Maternity Support Worker

This is a unique opportunity to work alongside the community midwifery team at Birmingham Womens Hospital, covering South Birmingham. We are looking for knowledgeable and passionate professionals, to support women and families throughout their pregnancy and postnatal journey. Special interest groups we have team members supporting specifically with equality and diversity, safeguarding, auditing, breastfeeding, antenatal education, infection control and more.

Provide specific clinical care tasks (obtain urine samples, urinalysis, obtain microbiological specimens, maternal observations, venepuncture clinics, newborn screening samples, carbon monoxide screening, offering basic support and advise and referring to the smoking cessation services, weigh babies, neonatal observations to include bilirubinometer and visiting women and babies at home.

Transporting of specimens.

Report any deviations from the normal range to the midwife

Take personal responsibility and accountability for own infection prevention and control practice

Take emergency action as necessary to safeguard women and babies, to call emergency services/children’s services as necessary

Provide basic public health advise and education to families

Assist the mother with practical care of the baby

Assist the mother with her chosen method of feeding the baby; including giving advice and information on breastfeeding to meet 'baby friendly' standards and sterilisation/safe preparation of milk.

Offer advice and support to vulnerable women/families by signposting them to the appropriate agencies

Assist in the restocking supplies/preparation of pregnancy information

Provide interpreting services between the woman and the midwife, if the post holder speaks the relevant language

Communication between the midwifery and multi-disciplinary team, women and their families

Clearly document all care given to the woman and baby
Respect confidentiality of information at all times
