Purpose of Position
This role is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of community sport projects in the
Dunedin region. This includes:
Improving sport opportunities and experiences for rangatahi in our region by influencing
coaching and competition formats that are aligned to participant motivations.
Leading our sport capability work with RSOs and local clubs by understanding sport in our
region and identifying areas of greatest need.
Create and strengthen regional sport network opportunities that are focused on providing
better sporting and coaching experiences for rangatahi.
KEY TASKS OUTCOMES
Sport Capability Drive the coordination of a regional sport network that has a
focus on improving collaboration opportunities to provide better
experiences for rangatahi across Otago, especially targeted to
competition formats and coaches and officials.
Support RSOs and other regional partners to provide quality
development opportunities and pathways for coaches and
officials in the rangatahi space.
Provide clear leadership and support to RSOs and other
regional partners, with a focus on aligned and participant-
centric competition formats across all domains of the Sports
Pathways Framework.
Assist RSOs and clubs to increase capability through the
utilisation of appropriate tools, resources, and training
opportunities.
Provide funding advice and guidance to RSOs and clubs in
Otago.
Work with the Insights Lead and Active Recreation Lead to
administer and analyse the Voice of Rangatahi (Vo R) survey in
Otago.
Use Vo R results to influence secondary schools to implement
relevant changes to sport provision that are rangatahi centred,
with a focus on coaching and sport competition formats.
Work with rangatahi, regional youth groups, and through
partner organisations to co-design and implement sport
participation and development opportunities based on
identified needs of rangatahi that are not engaged in sport.
Drive the uptake of Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa amongst
sporting organisations that work with rangatahi across Otago.
Spaces and Places In partnership with the Dunedin City Council (DCC), drive the
coordination and implementation of facility development. This
includes working with key stakeholders and the community to
navigate parties through regulatory requirements, funding, and
consent processes.
Assist the DCC to maximise utilisation of Council sport facilities
by identifying, developing, and implementing sport programme
opportunities and partnerships.
Promote Sport New Zealand Facilities Framework and project
relevant strategies and guides, including environmental
sustainability guidelines, planning tools, and data collection.
Relationship Management Develop and maintain an effective sport network with key
stakeholders who drive sport in Otago.
Work closely and develop strong working relationships with
OSSSA, secondary school Principals, secondary school Sports
Coordinators, RSO and Council staff.
Coordinate forum-based opportunities to develop relationships
and co-design between Principals, School Sport Coordinators,
RSO staff, and rangatahi.
Participate and contribute to any sport national hui or any other
Sport New Zealand led sport network learning opportunities.
Advocacy and Policy Provide expertise in the development, implementation, and
Advice evaluation of sport programmes and initiatives to Educational
Institutions, RSOs, community groups, and other delivery
agencies.
Effectively advocate for the positive development of sport policies
and programmes to Councils, funding agencies, media, and key
decision-makers within the Otago region.
Advocate to policy and planning agencies to create a safe and
user-friendly environment for people of all backgrounds to be
involved in sport.
Effectively advocate for initiatives and principles that are
consistent with Sport Otago’s sport aims and objectives.
Reporting and Contribute to the collection and reporting of data for the Sport
Accountability New Zealand Investment Schedule initiative outcomes and
other service delivery contract partners.
Capture ‘Insights’ via surveys and other means to determine
levels of effectiveness and satisfaction with services provided
by the Community Sport Advisor.
Ensure that all reporting to measure progress and impact is
completed on time and is compliant with Sport Otago’s
reporting protocols.
Best Practice Ensure the philosophies and principles underpinning Sport
Otago’s Regional Leadership Approach are applied, integrating
Physical Literacy, Locally Led, and Insights and Evaluation into
our mahi.
Ensure the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles of Partnership,
Protection, and Participation are acknowledged and reflected in
the implementation of our mahi.
Ensure all decisions and behaviours are inclusive and embrace
diversity across the sporting network through a commitment to
social justice, equity, and equality.
Mitigate and openly communicate any possible risks
or incidents that have the potential to bring Sport Otago and/or
invested partners into disrepute.
Actively collaborate with the wider Sport Otago team,
establishing a good working knowledge of other programmes
and initiatives and adding value to these workstreams via
integration of our sport mahi.
Assist in creating positive awareness of Sport Otago’s work
with the regional sport network and enhance the profile of
Sport Otago within the community.
Person Specification
Relevant tertiary qualification and/or significant experience in relation to sport.
Knowledge of the systems, structures, and operating models that underpin the sport sector
within Aotearoa.
Knowledge and understanding of Sport NZ’s strategies and approaches, specifically the
Insights, Physical Literacy, and Locally Led approaches.
Have a practical understanding of funding (particularly in relation to the ‘not-for-profit’ sector).
Experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing quality sport opportunities and
experiences.
Knowledge of, and commitment to, the Treaty of Waitangi.
Strong established sport networks within the Otago region.
A positive disposition towards quality physical activity and the importance and value it has on
individual health and wellbeing.
Exceptional relationship building skills, accompanied by a high level of emotional and social
intelligence.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience working with Regional Sport
Organisations, Councils, funders, schools, and clubs.
Experience in planning, managing, and prioritising multiple and competing tasks and projects
to meet deadlines and produce quality results.
A high level of verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and
communicate effectively to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences.
A track record of handling confidential and sensitive matters with exemplary discretion and
professionalism.
Awareness of the wider social and political context in which Regional Sports Trusts operate.
Experience in designing and facilitating professional learning and development
opportunities.
